Not all that glitters is gold, but Golden Treasure Mac doesn't need to shine to entice your taste buds into having another bowl! The tender macaroni is coated in an extra creamy and sharp cheese sauce with notes of smokiness for an extra tantalizing cheese experience! Then it's topped with crunchy, buttery, golden-brown breadcrumbs for more richness! Don't let Golden Treasure Mac become buried in the shuffle of the week; dig out your casserole dish and try it for yourself!
Ingredients
- For the mac and cheese:
- 10 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 (8-ounce) block Velveeta® cheese, cubed
- 1/2 cup Gouda cheese, shredded
- salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
- For the topping:
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup Gouda cheese, shredded
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -Lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Step 3 -In a large pot of salted, boiling water, add the macaroni and cook until it is al dente, according to the package directions.
Step 4 -Drain the macaroni and set it aside.
Step 5 -In a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter.
Step 6 -Add the flour to the melted butter in the saucepan and cook, while whisking, until the mixture is smooth and lightly golden, about 1-2 minutes.
Step 7 -Slowly add the milk to the butter mixture while whisking.
Step 8 -Cook the milk mixture, while whisking frequently, until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
Step 9 -Add the Velveeta cheese to the milk mixture and stir until it is melted.
Step 10 -Add 1/2 cup of the Gouda cheese to the cheese sauce and stir until it is melted and combined.
Step 11 -Taste the cheese sauce for seasoning and add the salt and the pepper, as needed.
Step 12 -Add the macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the macaroni is well-coated.
Step 13 -Transfer the macaroni mixture to the prepared baking dish.
Step 14 -In a small bowl, add the panko breadcrumbs and the remaining melted butter and stir until the breadcrumbs are evenly coated.
Step 15 -Add the remaining Gouda cheese to the breadcrumb mixture and toss lightly to combine.
Step 16 -Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the macaroni mixture in the baking dish.
Step 17 -Bake until the topping is golden-brown and the cheese is bubbling, about 20-25 minutes.
Step 18 -Serve hot.
