Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon cooking oil
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 pounds pork butt or boneless ribs, chopped into chunks
  • 1-2 cups water, starting with 1 cup and adding more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fish sauce
  • white rice, optional, cooked, for serving
  • green onions, optional, for garnish
  • sesame seeds, optional, for garnish
  • red pepper, optional, for garnish

Directions

Step 1 -Heat the cooking oil in a large skillet over medium-high on the stove-top.

Step 2 -Cook the onions and pork until the meat is browned, about 5 minutes.

Step 3 -Add 1 cup of the water, the soy sauce, the sugar, and the fish sauce to the skillet.

Step 4 -Bring the mixture to a boil and then the lower heat.

Step 5 -Simmer until the sauce has thickened and caramelized, about 30 minutes-1 hour.

Step 6 -Stir and serve over rice, topped with green onions, sesame seeds, and red pepper.
