Deep-South Dirty Rice is a classic of Cajun cooking, and one of the best side dishes ever invented! That's not hyperbole either... you'd be crazy not to love the deeply savory and succulent rice, cooked in beef broth and mixed with fresh bell peppers, celery, and onions! With bites of juicy ground beef and zesty Cajun seasoning, Deep-South Dirty Rice may have a dirty name but the taste it creates is pure bliss!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red or green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 cups white rice
  • 3 1/2 cups beef broth
  • green onions, optional, to taste, chopped, for garnish
  • parsley leaves, optional, to taste, for garnish

Directions

Step 1 -In a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook, while crumbling, until it is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 2 -Add the onions, the garlic, the bell peppers, the celery, the Cajun seasoning, and the salt to the beef and stir to combine.

Step 3 -Cook the beef mixture, while stirring, until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 4 -Add the rice and the beef broth to the beef mixture and bring the mixture to a boil.

Step 5 -Reduce the heat to low and cover the Dutch oven.

Step 6 -Simmer the beef mixture, covered, until the rice is fully cooked and the liquid is absorbed, about 20-23 minutes.

Step 7 -Allow the beef mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes.

Step 8 -Fluff the rice mixture with a fork.

Step 9 -Serve topped with the green onions and the parsley.
