Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 3/4 cup onions, chopped
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1 large lemon, sliced
  • 2 1/2-3 pounds miniature hot dogs or smoked sausage links

Directions

Step 1 -In a saucepan, heat the oil.

Step 2 -Add the onion to the hot oil and cook, while stirring, until tender, about 4-5 minutes.

Step 3 -Add the ketchup, the water, the cider vinegar, the sugar, the Worcestershire sauce, the honey, the ground mustard, the paprika, the salt, the pepper, and the hot pepper sauce to the onions and mix until well-combined.

Step 4 -Add the lemon slices to the sauce mixture.

Step 5 -Bring the sauce mixture to a boil.

Step 6 -Reduce the heat and simmer the sauce mixture, uncovered and while stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, about 20-25 minutes.

Step 7 -Remove and discard the lemon slices.

Step 8 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 9 -In a 9x13-inch baking dish, add the miniature hot dogs, spreading them out evenly.

Step 10 -Top the hot dogs with the sauce mixture.

Step 11 -Bake, uncovered, until heated through, about 18-20 minutes.

Step 12 -Serve the hot dogs and the sauce warm with toothpicks.
