Ingredients
- 8 ounces elbow or rotini pasta
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1/3 cup parmesan cheese, grated
- 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, lean
- 1 (28 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
Directions
Step 1 -Using a large pot filled with boiling salted water, cook the pasta according to the package directions. Make sure to stir every once in a while.
Step 2 -Drain the pasta and set it aside.
Step 3 -In a mixing bowl, add together the bread crumbs and parmesan cheese. Set it aside.
Step 4 -In a 3 quart oven-safe pot, heat up the olive oil over medium heat on the stovetop.
Step 5 -Add in the onion and garlic, cooking for about 4 minutes and stirring constantly to prevent the garlic from burning.
Step 6 -Increase the heat to a medium-high.
Step 7 -Add in the ground beef and cook until you can see that the beef is well browned and juicy, about 7 minutes.
Step 8 -Scrape the beef into a colander to drain off the excess grease.
Step 9 -Wipe the pan and return the beef to the pan.
Step 10 -Reduce the heat to a medium.
Step 11 -Set the broiler.
Step 12 -Stir in the tomatoes, the salt, the oregano and the pepper into the already cooked beef, cooking for an additional 3 minutes. Add in the reserved pasta and mix it all together thoroughly.
Step 13 -Cook for another 2-3 minutes to heat up the pasta.
Step 14 -Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cheddar cheese.
Step 15 -Sprinkle the reserved bread crumb mixture on top of the pasta.
Step 16 -Cook the casserole under the broiler until it is golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
Step 17 -Serve hot!
