Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 large cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 (8-ounce) package sliced cremini mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped, plus more, to taste, for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • kosher salt, to taste
  • 12 ounces pasta, of your choice, cooked and hot, for serving

Directions

Step 1 -In a large, deep-sided skillet over medium-high heat, add the canola oil.

Step 2 -Add the beef, the onions, and the garlic and cook, while stirring often and crumbling the beef, until the meat is browned, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 3 -Transfer the beef mixture to a medium, heatproof bowl, ensuring to leave the drippings in the skillet.

Step 4 -In the same skillet with the reserved beef drippings, melt the butter.

Step 5 -Add the mushrooms to the melted butter mixture and cook, while stirring occasionally, until they are golden-brown and tender, about 6-8 minutes.

Step 6 -Reduce the heat to medium.

Step 7 -Add the flour to the mushroom mixture and cook, while stirring constantly, until it is lightly browned, about 2 minutes.

Step 8 -Gradually add the beef broth to the mushroom mixture, while whisking, until it is incorporated and smooth.

Step 9 -Add the beef mixture, the Worcestershire sauce, the mustard, 1 teaspoon of the thyme, and the black pepper to the mushroom mixture and stir to combine.

Step 10 -Bring the beef mixture to a simmer over medium heat and cook, while stirring occasionally, until the flavors meld together and the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 11 -Taste the beef mixture for seasoning and add the salt, as needed.

Step 12 -Serve over the pasta and garnish with the extra thyme.
