Ingredients

  • For the chili:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 cups plus 1 tablespoon water, divided
  • 1/2 tablespoon paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • salt, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste
  • For the hot dogs:
  • 10 hot dogs
  • 10 hot dog buns, optionally toasted
  • fresh red onion, optional, to taste, sliced
  • mustard, optional, to taste

Directions

Step 1 -In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter.

Step 2 -Add the ground beef to the melted butter and cook, while crumbling, until the meat is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 3 -Add 3 cups of the water, the paprika, the cinnamon, the sugar, the cloves, the turmeric, the garlic powder, the chili powder, the nutmeg, the dry mustard, the oregano, the cumin, the cayenne pepper, and the sweet onions to the beef mixture and stir to combine.

Step 4 -Bring the beef mixture to a boil.

Step 5 -Reduce the heat to low.

Step 6 -Simmer the beef mixture, uncovered, until it is thickened but there is still some liquid, about 1 hour 30 minutes-2 hours.

Step 7 -In a small bowl, add the cornstarch and the remaining water and whisk to combine.

Step 8 -Add the slurry to the beef mixture and stir until thickened.

Step 9 -Taste the chili for seasoning and add the salt and the pepper, as needed.

Step 10 -Grill or boil the hot dogs until they reach an internal temperature of 140-160 degrees F, according to the package directions.

Step 11 -Place 1 of the cooked hot dogs into each of the buns.

Step 12 -Top the hot dogs with the beef chili, the red onions, and the mustard.

Step 13 -Serve.
