The Carolinas know how to do their burgers! The secret to The Carolina Burger is to stack it high with tasty addition after tasty addition! The juicy beef patty is topped with crunchy, creamy coleslaw for a touch of refreshment, beefy, spicy chili for extra meatiness and savoriness, and mustard for some extra tang. This burger doesn't need condiments when every bite feels like a mini barbecue on your tongue! The Carolina Burger towers over other burgers and doesn't even take too much longer to make, so there's no reason not to give it a try. Just be warned, other burgers might pale in comparison after this!

Ingredients

  • For the coleslaw:
  • 1 (16-ounce) package coleslaw mix
  • 2 tablespoons onion, minced
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • For the chili:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 (1-ounce) packet chili seasoning
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 small sweet onion, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • For the burger:
  • 1/2 pound ground chuck
  • 1 teaspoon steak seasoning
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese, optional
  • Optional, for serving:
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 4 bakery buns, halved
  • 2 tablespoons diced onions

Directions

Step 1 -Combine the coleslaw mix, 2 tablespoons of the minced onion, the mayonnaise, the vinegar, the sugar, the celery seeds, the garlic powder, the pepper, and the salt together in a large bowl.

Step 2 -Refrigerate the coleslaw until ready to use.

Step 3 -In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4 -Add the chili seasoning, the water, the remaining 1/2 minced onion, and the ketchup.

Step 5 -Simmer until the chili is thickened and the meat is tender, for about 10 minutes.

Step 6 -Gently pat the ground chuck into 4 equal patties, putting a small divot in the center of each with your thumb.

Step 7 -Sprinkle the patties with the steak seasoning.

Step 8 -In a skillet over medium heat, cook the burgers until heated to at least 145 degrees F internally for medium, about 4 minutes per side.

Step 9 -Top the patties with the cheddar cheese and cook until melted.

Step 10 -Spread the mustard on the inside of the buns.

Step 11 -Place the burgers on the bottom buns and top with the chili, the slaw, and the remaining diced onions.

Step 12 -Close the buns and serve.
