Every day is special when you wake up with some Oven Buttermilk French Toast! Truly. There's nothing better than starting your day with these golden-brown, super flavorful, slices of sweetness. You'll be feeling all the joy and excitement for the day as you sprinkle these slices of heaven with some juicy berries and powdered sugar. And of course, you can't forget the syrup! Only good days will follow after having Oven Buttermilk French Toast for breakfast and who can argue with that?!
Ingredients
- For the French toast:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest, plus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 27 French bread slices, from a French baguette, sliced 1/2-inch-thick
- Optional toppings:
- maple syrup, to taste
- confectioners' sugar, to taste
- fresh berries, such as blackberries, blueberries, and/or strawberries, to taste
Directions
Step 1 -Lightly coat a 13x9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Step 2 -In a large bowl, add the eggs, the buttermilk, the heavy cream, the granulated sugar, the lemon zest, the lemon juice, the vanilla extract, and the salt, whisking to combine.
Step 3 -Dip the bread slices, 1 at a time, into the egg mixture to completely saturate them on both sides.
Step 4 -Shingle the soaked bread slices in the bottom of the prepared baking dish, then let it stand at room temperature, about 1 hour.
Step 5 -Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
Step 6 -Pour out and discard any of the egg mixture that has accumulated in the bottom of the baking dish.
Step 7 -Bake the French toast until the top is golden-brown, about 30 minutes.
Step 8 -Transfer the baking dish from the oven and let it stand, about 15 minutes.
Step 9 -Serve the French toast with the maple syrup, the confectioners' sugar, and the fresh berries.
