There's no need for side dishes when Hash Brown Steak is on the menu; it has everything you need piled high right on top! This is the best potatoes-on-meat dish since shepherd's pie!
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups frozen shredded hash brown potatoes, thawed
- 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
- 1 cup Jarlsberg® cheese, shredded
- 1 (1-inch-thick, 1 1/2-pound) beef top sirloin steak, cut into 4 portions
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh chives, minced, for garnished
Directions
Step 1 -In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter.
Step 2 -Add the onions to the melted butter and cook, while stirring, until tender, about 2-3 minutes.
Step 3 -Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes.
Step 4 -Add the hash browns and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and spread it out evenly in the skillet.
Step 5 -Reduce the heat to medium and let the hash browns cook undisturbed until the bottom has lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
Step 6 -Turn the hash browns and cook until the hash browns are heated through and the bottom has lightly browned, about 5-6 minutes.
Step 7 -Sprinkle the cheese over the hash browns and immediately cover the skillet.
Step 8 -Transfer the skillet from the heat and keep it warm.
Step 9 -Season the steaks with the remaining salt and the pepper.
Step 10 -Preheat the grill to medium heat.
Step 11 -Add the steaks to the hot grill and cook, covered, until the steaks reach an internal temperature of 135 degrees F for medium-rare, about 5-7 minutes per side.
Step 12 -Transfer the steaks from the heat.
Step 13 -Top each steak with 1/4 of the cheesy hash browns.
Step 14 -Serve garnished with the chives.
