Ingredients

  • For the beef:
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional, for serving:
  • 2 cups white or brown rice, cooked and hot
  • green onions, to taste, sliced
  • sesame seeds, to taste

Directions

Step 1 -In a large skillet over medium heat, add the beef and the garlic and cook, while crumbling the meat, until the beef is no longer pink, about 5-8 minutes.

Step 2 -Drain the excess grease and return the skillet to the heat.

Step 3 -In a small bowl, add the brown sugar, the soy sauce, the sesame oil, the ginger, the red pepper flakes, and the black pepper and whisk to combine.

Step 4 -Pour the sauce mixture over the ground beef in the skillet and let it simmer, while stirring occasionally to coat, until the beef is thoroughly coated and the flavors have melded together, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 5 -Plate the beef over the hot rice.

Step 6 -Garnish with the green onions and the sesame seeds and serve.
