Ingredients

  • 10 large egg, plus more as needed
  • 2 cups milk, plus more as needed
  • 3 cups cheddar cheese, grated
  • 6 slices day-old bread, cut into 3/4-1 inch-wide cubes
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste
  • Optional fillings:
  • 1 cup sausage, cooked
  • 1 cup ham, cooked and cubed
  • 1/2 cup broccoli, chopped
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms, chopped
  • 1/4 cup green onions, chopped
  • 1/4 cup onions, chopped and cooked
  • 1 cup corn
  • 4 slices bacon, cooked and chopped

Directions

Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 -Butter a 9x13-inch casserole dish.

Step 3 -Beat the eggs in a large bowl.

Step 4 -Mix in the milk and cheese.

Step 5 -Add the bread and carefully stir until all pieces of bread are moistened. Don't over mix or the bread may disintegrate.

Step 6 -Add salt and pepper, moderating the amount added depending on your choice of fillings. For example, if using sausage, you should use a tiny amount of salt and pepper. If you have a lot of additions, you might need a couple more eggs to make sure that everything is at least touching some egg mixture. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of milk for every beaten egg you add.

Step 7 -Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole dish.

Step 8 -Bake until the top is browned and the center springs back when touched, about 50 minutes-1 hour.

Step 9 -Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Step 10 -Serve warm!
