  • For the cake:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 (15.25-ounce) box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 (3.9-ounce) box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 12 ounces chocolate chips
  • Optional, for topping:
  • ice cream, to taste, of your choice
  • chocolate chips, to taste
  • chocolate sauce, to taste

Directions

Step 1 -In a 9x13-inch baking dish, add the butter.

Step 2 -Place the baking dish in the oven and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 3 -Once the butter is melted, immediately transfer the dish from the oven.

Step 4 -Briefly stir the butter in the baking dish, making sure it covers the bottom.

Step 5 -In an even, flat layer, sprinkle the cake mix over the melted butter in the baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Step 6 -Sprinkle the pudding mix on top of the cake mix layer and spread it out evenly.

Step 7 -Drizzle the milk on top of the pudding mix layer and carefully tilt and swirl the baking dish to cover as much of the pudding mix layer as possible with the milk.

Step 8 -Using a spoon or the back of a fork, gently press down on the pudding mix layer to cover as many dry spots as possible with the milk.

Step 9 -Sprinkle 12 ounces of the chocolate chips over the top of the layers in the baking dish.

Step 10 -Bake the cake until the top looks set while still soft and jiggly, about 35-40 minutes.

Step 11 -Serve warm topped with the ice cream, the extra chocolate chips, and the chocolate sauce.
