At every family gathering, there is that one dish that you can always rely on being there. Grandma's Famous Orange Salad is the much-anticipated delight everyone always gets excited about. Grammy knew best when she added mandarin oranges, pineapples, and bananas to an orange gelatin-sherbet combo to make a simple, yet always delicious treat. Grandma's Famous Orange Salad is the ultimate comfort when it comes to dessert because, well, it's homemade and it's from grandma. Need we say more?!
Ingredients
- 1 (11-ounce) can mandarin oranges, drained and juices reserved
- 1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained and juices reserved
- water, to taste
- 1 (6-ounce) package orange gelatin
- 1 pint orange sherbet, softened
- 2 bananas, sliced
Directions
Step 1 -Add the reserved mandarin orange juice and the reserved pineapple juice to a large glass measuring cup.
Step 2 -Add enough of the water to the juices so that the mixture measures 2 cups.
Step 3 -In a saucepan, add the juice mixture and bring it to a boil, then transfer from the heat.
Step 4 -In a large heat-safe bowl, add the orange gelatin and the hot juice mixture and stir until the gelatin has dissolved.
Step 5 -Add the orange sherbet to the gelatin mixture and stir until it is smooth.
Step 6 -Transfer the gelatin mixture to the refrigerator and let it chill until it is partially set. Watch it carefully so that it doesn't fully set.
Step 7 -Lightly grease enough small serving dishes or a 6-cup mold.
Step 8 -Add the mandarin oranges, the pineapples, and the sliced bananas to the partially set gelatin mixture and lightly fold to combine.
Step 9 -Evenly divide the orange salad between the prepared serving dishes or pour it into the prepared mold.
Step 10 -Place the orange salad in the refrigerator and let it chill completely until it is firm.
Step 11 -Serve.
