For the bake: • 3 tablespoons butter, softened • 24 slices french bread, 1/2-inch thick • 1 (12-ounce) jar orange marmalade • 6 large eggs • 2 3/4 cups milk, not skim • 1/3 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/3 cup walnuts, finely chopped For the syrup: • 1 1/4 cups maple syrup • 1/3 cup orange juice • 2 teaspoons orange zest, gratedDirections
Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Spread the butter over one side of each slice of the french bread.
Place half of the bread slices into the baking dish, buttered side down.
Spread the marmalade over the top of the bread slices in the baking dish.
Place the other half of the bread slices on top of the marmalade, buttered side up.
In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg until fully blended.
Pour the egg mixture over the bread.
Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, if not overnight.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Remove the casserole from the fridge and uncover.
Sprinkle the bread with walnuts.
Bake until the bread is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40-50 minutes.
Remove the bake from the oven and let it stand for 5-10 minutes.
In a small saucepan over medium heat on the stove-top, combine the maple syrup, orange juice, and zest.
Cook until heated through.
Serve warm with the syrup!
