Fried Cheese Curds

A true Wisconsin staple! These tasty Fried Cheese Curds have a crispy crust containing a melty, gooey, cheesy filling! Dipped in gravy, ketchup, or mustard, Fried Cheese Curds are sure to be crowd-pleasers! They’re easy to make and even easier to eat! Just make sure you make enough, because they tend to vanish in a hurry!


• 2 cups buttermilk • 2 cups lager beer • 16 ounces cheese curds • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 4 cups vegetable oil • preferred dipping sauce, optional, for serving


Step 1

In a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and the beer.

Step 2

Place the cheese curds in a mesh strainer.

Step 3

Using the strainer, submerge the curds in the beer and buttermilk mixture.

Step 4

In another large bowl, combine the flour, the baking powder, the salt, and the pepper.

Step 5

In a Dutch oven, heat the oil to 375 degrees.

Step 6

Remove the curds from the buttermilk mixture and drain.

Step 7

Dredge the cheese curds in the flour mixture.

Step 8

Fry the cheese curds in batches until golden brown, about 1-3 minutes.

Step 9

Transfer the fried cheese curds to a paper towel to drain.
