Ingredients• 1/2 pound Italian sausage links • 1 onion, finely diced • 2 cups milk • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth, plus more as needed • 1 1/2 cups uncooked penne • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 teaspoon pepper • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded • 1/2 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, shredded • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste
In a large pot over medium heat, brown the sausage and the onion, for about 5-7 minutes.
Add the milk, broth, and pasta to the pot.
Stir in the cornstarch, garlic powder, sugar, paprika, and pepper.
Bring the mixture to a boil.
Reduce the heat to a simmer and cover.
Cook until the pasta is tender and the sausage is cooked through at 145 degrees F, about 10-16 minutes. Add more broth as needed as it cooks.
Remove the pot from the heat.
Transfer the sausage to a cutting board and slice.
Stir the cheddar, Gruyere, and parmesan into the pasta until melted, about 4-5 minutes.
Stir in the sliced sausage.
Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper, to taste, if desired.
